Houston Astros(51-111, 5th place) Off-season Acquisitions- Scott Feldman, Jesse Crain, Matt Albers, Adron Chambers, Cesar Izturis, Peter Moylan, Chad Qualls, Jerome Williams. Acquired Dexter Fowler via trade.
A team that is still rebuilding from their early 2000’s success the Astros are looking for that young core of players to build around. In their 2nd year in the AL West the Astros look to move forward slightly in the process of winning. While they are ultimately the worst team in the AL west the Astros will look to avoid losing 100 or more games for the 4th straight season. I Predict the Astros finish last in the AL West.
Los Angeles Angels(78-84, 3rd place) Off-season Acquisitions- Carlos Pena, Raul Ibanez, John McDonald, Joe Smith, Chad Tracy, Yorvit Torrealba. They traded away Mark Trumbo to the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitcher Tyler Skaggs and Hector Santiago. Also traded for David Freese in exchange for Peter Bourjos.
A team that is basically in a bidding war with the Dodgers on who can be the team of LA the Angels have been a major disappointment the past 2 seasons. Spending big money on players like Josh Hamilton & Albert Pujols haven’t turned out the way the front office and fans have expected them too. With young stud Mike Trout the Angels have one of the best players in all of baseball, but have to worry about their lack of starting pitching depth. Another bad season could be the end of the road for long running manager Mike Scioscia, and I believe we see that happen. I see the Angels finishing the season in 4th place.
Oakland Athletics(96-66, Division champs) Off-season Acquisitions- Scott Kazmir, Phillip Humber, Nick Punto, Eric O’ Flaherty, Sam Fuld. Traded for closer Jim Johnson, left handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen.
A team that for the most part in the eyes of the national media has overachieved the past few years; The Athletics look to win the AL West for the 2nd consecutive year. Under manager Bob Melvin the Athletics have returned to form and have given their fans plenty to cheer about the past couple of seasons. While I believe the team will have a .500 record I see teams in their division getting better and that the Athletics finish 3rd in the West.
Seattle Mariners(71-91, 4th place) Off-season Acquisitions- Robinson Cano, Corey Hart, Fernando Rodney, Scott Baker, John Buck, Endy Chavez, Humberto Quintero. Traded for 1st baseman Logan Morrison.
A team that has made the biggest splash and surprise of the off-season when they signed 2nd baseman Robinson Cano away from the New York Yankees; The Mariners look to bring back the magic they had one time with Griffey, Johnson & Rodriguez. Also firing manager Eric Wedge and bringing in former Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon I see the Mariners making a push similar to the Cleveland Indians made this past season under 1st year manager Terry Francona. I believe we see the Mariners battle for either one of the wild card spots in the AL. I have the Mariners finishing 2nd in the AL West.
Texas Rangers(91-72, 2nd place)- Off-season Acquisitions- Shin-Soo Choo, Tommy Hanson, Geovany Soto, J.P. Arencibia, Adam Rosales. Traded for power bat Prince Fielder in exchange for all-star 2nd baseman Ian Kinsler,
A team that has been one of the other busiest teams this off-season the Rangers looked to bring a more explosive lineup to their team and with the additions this off-season they might have just done that. Under manager Ron Washington the Rangers have been almost a lock for the playoffs for the last few seasons. With ace pitcher Yu Darvish leading the rotation and a lineup now with Choo & Fielder the Rangers look to once again win the AL West and eventually make it back to the World Series. I think we see the Rangers as of right now do one of those two things and that is win the AL West.
In the survey below let me know who you think will win the AL West this season.
