Titles Are Not Won Via The Draft

The NBA draft is right around the corner, and plenty of lottery teams are hoping to land that mega superstar who will take their team to the promise land and win a NBA Championship. Ever since LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers the Cavs have been living in the NBA draft, and high in the draft lottery. They have been using the “OKC Model” where they build a NBA championship contender through the NBA draft. While that hasn’t worked very well for either team as the Cavs haven’t made the playoffs without James, and the Oklahoma City Thunder have only made it to the NBA Finals once. The past 20 champions in the NBA have been (Rockets, Bulls, Spurs, Lakers, Pistons, Heat, Celtics, and Mavericks) which is a total of just eight different champions from 1994-2013. Right now we will take a look at the teams who have won the title, and how they have assembled their starting five along with sixth man.

2014 San Antonio Spurs- Tony Parker via draft(late 1st round pick) Danny Green via FA, Kawhi Leonard via draft(mid 1st round pick) Tim Duncan via draft(1st overall) Tiago Splitter via draft(late 1st round pick) Manu Ginobili via draft(2nd round pick)

2001- Los Angeles Lakers- Derek Fisher via draft(mid 1st round pick) Kobe Bryant via draft(lottery pick) Rick Fox via FA, Horace Grant via trade, Shaquille O’Neal via FA & Brian Shaw via FA.

2000- Los Angeles Lakers- Ron Harper via FA, Kobe Bryant via draft(lottery pick) Glen Rice via trade, A.C. Green via draft/FA, Shaquille O’Neal via FA & Derek Fisher via draft(mid 1st round pick).

1999- San Antonio Spurs- Avery Johnson via FA, Mario Elie via FA, Sean Elliott via draft/FA, Tim Duncan via draft(1st overall) David Robinson via draft(1st overall) & Jaren Jackson via FA.

1998- Chicago Bulls- Ron Harper via FA, Michael Jordan via draft(lottery pick) Toni Kukoc via draft(2nd round) Dennis Rodman via trade, Luc Longley via trade & Scottie Pippen via draft(lottery pick).

1994- Houston Rockets- Kenny Smith via FA, Vernon Maxwell via FA, Robert Horry via draft(lottery pick) Otis Thorpe via FA, Hakeem Olajuwon via draft(1st overall) & Mario Elie via trade.

Now with this information the “OKC Model” seems to be a flawed once since they haven’t won a title yet, and they are basically using the “Spurs Model”. While teams have players they have drafted high in the draft & even in the mid-to-late picks in the draft most teams use free agency, and trades to build a championship team.
